...Time travel was never this inconvenient – or terrifying. Holly and Callum have to cope with a dangerous old book, a witch (perhaps) and worst of all, the cold-eyed Hermetic Doctor of Wigtown: Jared Sliddery, inhabitant of The Crow House...
The Crow House is a new mystery/horror novel for children aged 9 to 12. Drenched in atmosphere, it shifts with pace and real disturbance through both time and place.
Holly Berry is thirteen and has no mum. Callum Murray is twelve and has no dad. But their parents Stan and Liddy are keen to live together. Holly finds herself dropped off to spend some summer weeks with her new family in their old house and bookshop in Wigtown, while her dad sorts out the sale of his business.
Wigtown is Scotland’s Book Town: a Georgian village by the sea with a wide street lined with bookshops. Holly finds Wigtown a bit quiet, but believes Liddy is likely to be good for her dad. Callum is another matter – hostile and unfriendly, and Holly finds she is largely left on her own to take rides on Liddy’s old pony, Drum.
But all is not as quiet as it first appears. Slowly Holly and Callum find themselves drawn into sometimes exciting, sometimes terrifying, time-slip adventures. Through a series of accidents and coincidences, they become aware of very different lives in No. 71 North Main Street – or The Crow House, as it was once known.
