In the Oakland, California, of 1989, Mirai San Julian is a young woman with a fascinating life and a rich past. She restores historic carousels -- her dream career -- working from her own studio in a former roller skating rink. Though black herself, she spent her first years in a Basque immigrant community in Nevada, the adopted child of a single mother. And after the mother's death, she was raised by her Aunt Joy in a Catholic Worker house.

Mirai has a lot going for her -- but then, why is everything suddenly falling apart? Her current, year-long carousel project is veering crazily out of control, in both schedule and budget. The guy who dumped her only months before has shown up married and -- as far as Mirai is concerned -- to the worst possible person. Her mother's death long ago is looking less and less like an accident. And Joy, the one person who has had her complete trust, may know more about that death than she has let Mirai believe.

Mirai knows how to restore a carousel, but can she restore relationships with those she loves? Can she strip the old paint of past wrongs to prepare her life for new, more vibrant colors? And will her eyes be clear enough to spot the brass ring when it finally comes within reach?

"The Serena Wilcox Mysteries: Books 1, 2 & 3" features "Gene Play", "Virtual Memories" and "Camp Conviction", plus commentaries, behind-the-scenes stories and more! Get to know Serena Wilcox in this 3-book set. Catch up to books 4 and 5 of the series ("Angels Mark", 2011 and "Covert Coffee", to be published 2012) to enjoy creative suspense with multiple plot twists and outrageous characters you will think about long after you've finished reading.

The Serena Wilcox Mysteries have been described as clever, witty, "oodles of fun", page-turners, one-night-reads, and most of all, books that readers can't wait to read more of. The series begins with the little red book "Gene Play". It had a print run of only 500 copies and until now has not been available for a wide audience. The second book "Virtual Memories" is a cross-genre mystery with light sci-fi woven into the plot. The third book "Camp Conviction" is the most humorous of the three, and lays down the foundation for Serena Wilcox to transition to her new role in "Angels Mark". All three books have been revised and updated slightly, leaving their original voice intact.

From Booklist
Originally published in Canada in 2003 (but never distributed in the U.S.), this moving story features Sarah Richardson, whose family moves from the Montana countryside to Vancouver Island just as she's about to enter sixth grade. Sarah soon finds that island life suits her perfectly--thanks, especially, to her new best friend, Goldie, whose Native American heritage Sarah finds fascinating, especially the wisdom passed to the girls from Goldie's grandmother, Nana. Sarah is also intrigued to learn that her marine-biologist father shares a passion with her new Indian friends: killer whales, which the natives revere and her father studies. Life isn't all native spirituality, however, as Sarah must confront a family tragedy that will change her life forever. Though overly melodramatic in places, Tardif's story has that perennially crowd-pleasing combination of sweet and sad that so often propels popular commercial fiction, especially coming-of-age stories. Tardif, already a big hit in Canada, may soon be a name to reckon with south of the border. Mary Frances Wilkens
